First Responders Cup Tournament
|Posted by jack on July 18, 2021 at 12:00 AM|
We are back and preparing for the Twentieth First Responders Cup Tournament for September 11th and 12th of 2021.Due to the continued pandemic, we are limiting the field of teams to sixteen(16) from twenty-four(24). We will still offer three play in games and the championship round. We will strictly enforce social distancing and enhanced game precaution to ensure the safety of those playing. We hope to offer four brackets, 12,14,16 and 18, but that will depend on teams, competition and interest. This year ALL games will be played at the Bacroft Sports Complex. More come as we 'shake off' the dust of a year in quarantine.

A year after the horrific events of September 11, 2001, where terrorists sought to cower the United States into submission that others could rule their lives, seven teams of 12 and 14 and under girls softball teams came together to play fastpitch softball. In the shadows of the still under rebuild Pentagon, these young ladies came to send a message to the world that America would not stay silent. Seven teams came from Virginia, New York and Pennsylvania to play. A number of the players on the team had lost family members in the attacks. As the Arlington Fire Chief Ed Plaugher noted 'what a wonderful way to celebrate the response of our First Responders to have such an event'. Those who play this year, send a message to those eighty young ladies who played that day that they come to honor their efforts and continue the tradition. We have been so fortunate to have the support of the County, the United States Army and the Federal Government. Here we have a photo of the second tournament, where the United States Chief Justice came to participate in support of his grand daughter who was playing.

What a great tournament with an incedible spirit and sportsmanship from all of the teams! Even through the unfortunate weather on Saturday, Sunday was some of the best tournament play we have seen in many years.
For the past several years the Tournament Comittee puts together a video retrospective on the weekend's events to capture the spirit of this tournament. This year's video is to the song: Fight Song by Rachel Platten.
